Universal Musician
Music not only “has charms to soothe the savage breast.” It also helps us to heal.
While acknowledging the role of music in addressing illness is not new, recent research is illuminating how music affects the brain and other body systems in a measurable way. Using that knowledge, practitioners can now integrate music with medicine to augment healing.
Is there a connection between music and health?
The ancient Greeks certainly thought so: They put one god, Apollo, in charge of both healing and music. Recent medical studies seem to confirm what the Greeks thought. Music seems to slow heart rate, lower blood pressure, and reduce levels of stress hormones. It can also provide some relief to heart attack and stroke victims and patients undergoing surgery.
How does music exert these benefits? Some research suggests that music may promote the brain’s ability to make new connections between nerve cells.
Another idea is that it works its magic through its rhythms. Humans are rhythmic beings: Our heartbeat, breathing, and brain waves are all rhythmic. The human brain and nervous system are hard-wired to distinguish music from noise and to respond to rhythm and repetition, tones and tunes.
Music therapy—the use of music to address physical, psychological, cognitive and/or social problems — now plays an accepted role in modern medicine, for children as well as adults.
Today, several colleges and universities offer degrees in music therapy, several organizations provide certification in the field, and many hospitals offer the therapy to patients. There are different approaches to music therapy, which can be done one-on-one or in a group, can use instrumental or vocal music, and can involve just listening to music, moving to it, or actively making it.
The Universal Musician Project has been created to further these advances of music in medicine. The project supports clinical practice and research related to music interventions and applications of clinical music strategies in medicine.
Mission Statement
The Universal Musician Project seeks to advance research, theory, and practice in music to foster the development, understanding and use of music therapy and music-based interventions.
To this end, Universal Musician Project will advocate all types of research, including quantitative, qualitative, historical, philosophical, theoretical, and musical, and may include discipline, profession, and foundational research.
The Universal Musician Project aims to sponsor and fund a variety of research approaches and topics, to promote critical inquiry, and to serve as a resource and forum for researchers, educators, and clinicians in music therapy and related professions. The Universal Musician Project will study and apply the psychology of music, applied music therapy techniques, perception of music, and effects of music on human behavior.
The Universal Musician Project is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music. Music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. The Project is in search of inspiration and the heartbeat of the people of the world.
Music stars from all genres, all around the world have been coming together to make music for a cause for decades. Whether it is to raise awareness to end apartheid or to raise funds for famine relief in Africa, benefit concerts and songs have rocked the hearts, minds, and ears of activists — and helped make real and lasting change.
As such, The Universal Musician will form a global collaborative to write and publish a “World’s Song.” Musicians and artists, students and teachers, doctors and researchers, and all will be invited to connect and begin collaboration using the resources within TheNoteworthyMuse.com.
We will create a playground where members will be able to connect, share and collaborate with whom they choose. We will travel the globe recording and filming musicians, creating songs and building a global family. And a global campaign to secure funding ‘music in medicine.’
One of our first goals will be to create a song that would be a united prayer to inspire hope and send a message of unity to the global population. Musicians around the world will collaborate to remove the barriers of distance and the cost of using traditional music studios, as well as making it easier to acquire the services of busy professionals, anywhere they are in the world.
Great songs can travel everywhere bridging what divides us and inspiring us to see how easily we all get along when the music plays. Our goal is to unite many of the greatest musicians we’ve met throughout our life journey from many different countries and cultures, but through music they speak the same language.
We will spread the message of love and hope to audiences everywhere
We will give all people the chance to join the movement by becoming a member and together we will make the world a better place
We will act as an advocacy platform and resource network for advancing the use of music in medical practice
And we will create a US 501(c)3 nonprofit foundation / organization dedicated to uniting people around the world and creating hope and inspiration for the future of our planet… a global nonprofit organization offering creative opportunities for the advancement of music in medical practice
We are all united through music.
